BEACH PICS

Things to Do...

There are several excellent restaurants in Pacific City (a small fishing town 4 miles south of our house) as well as "basics" such as grocery store, video rental, fish market etc. Also some nice "browsable" shops are springing up.

Horseback riding on the beach is available a few miles north of the house. And in Pacific City, dory boat rides and/or fishing trips are available as are boat trips upriver to a bird sanctuary and scenic plane rides along the coast.

There's even a place that offers surfing lessons for the kids and/or surfboard rental.

There are some beautiful drives in the area (eg. follow 3 Capes Road all the way to Tillamook, passing spectacular Cape Lookout, the Cape Meares Lighthouse, the "Octopus Tree", the very photogenic town of Oceanside, and finally the remains (not much) of "Bay Ocean" - a planned "Atlantic City" that was built on a spit of land that - you guessed it - slowly sunk into the sea.

Or - the top of my list of things to do - simply spend hours walking on our beach.

In theory you can walk all the way to Cape Lookout (10 miles north). Personally I rarely get past the estuary (about 2 miles). It's a great place to spot seals, herons, pelicans, cormorants, eagles etc. etc. The river/creek is crossable at low tide. If you walk south on the beach for about 3 miles you come to the north side of Cape Kiwanda. You can climb up it and roll down the dunes or sneak in a small archway and see tidepools. At high tide this becomes a "punchbowl" where the force of the incoming waves is trapped and explodes, geyser-like, through the arch.
